US Accuses Iranian Hackers of Sharing Trump Campaign Data

Hackers Target Trump Campaign

US intelligence agencies and the FBI reported that Iranian hackers obtained and distributed sensitive Trump campaign information. The cyberattack, occurring between late June and early July, raised concerns about election interference. Officials confirmed the hackers shared the information through unsolicited emails. However, there is no evidence that anyone from the Biden campaign responded or engaged with the hackers.

Iran’s Election Interference Strategy

US officials have warned that Iran aims to sow discord and undermine trust in American institutions ahead of the upcoming election. According to intelligence reports, Iranian operatives have used social engineering tactics to infiltrate both Democratic and Republican campaigns. This incident marks one of the latest efforts by foreign actors, including Iran and Russia, to meddle in US elections by accessing campaign data.

Trump Campaign Demands Accountability

Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt accused Iran of aiding Biden and Harris by compromising Trump’s campaign. Leavitt demanded the Biden team provide answers, questioning their knowledge of the hack. Trump accused the Biden administration of collaborating with Iran. He suggested that the stolen materials had been deliberately shared with Biden’s campaign.

Biden Campaign Denies Involvement

Morgan Finkelstein, a spokesperson for the Biden-Harris campaign, confirmed that the campaign had cooperated with authorities once informed of the hacking incident. Finkelstein clarified that no material was sent directly to the campaign, describing the emails as suspicious phishing attempts. The campaign strongly condemned any foreign interference in the election process, emphasizing their commitment to transparency.

FBI Continues Investigation

The FBI confirmed that it is actively investigating the cyberattack, working closely with the victims of the hack to prevent further interference. In a statement, the agency reiterated its efforts to disrupt foreign actors attempting to influence the election. Iranian officials, however, denied any involvement, dismissing the allegations as baseless and reaffirming their stance of non-interference in the US election.

Heightened Security Following Threats

The hacking revelations come amid renewed security concerns for Donald Trump, following reports of assassination attempts. In July, Trump was injured during a rally in Pennsylvania, prompting increased security measures. Supporters at a recent rally expressed their frustration over the lack of protection, blaming Democrats and calling for more efforts to safeguard the former president.
