The United States Mission in Nigeria has praised the peaceful conduct of the Edo State governorship election, but remained silent on the irregularities that overshadowed the process. Despite reports of vote buying and the intimidation of opposition members, the US focused on commending the voters and authorities for maintaining calm during the election.
US Commendation for Edo Election
The US Mission, in a statement released by Ambassador Richard Mills Jr., acknowledged the peaceful atmosphere during the Edo State election. However, the statement did not address the allegations of widespread irregularities that marred the electoral process. These issues included the purchasing of votes and reports of police intimidation aimed at opposition party members.
Irregularities Overshadow Election Process
The September 21 election in Edo State saw allegations of vote buying and political bullying, yet these critical issues were absent from the US Mission’s statement. Local observers revealed that police intimidated opposition members, which undermined the credibility of the electoral process. Despite this, many accepted the election results, allowing room for legal challenges.
Call for Calm Amid Results
The US Mission commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for urging peace and maintaining calm during the tense electoral period. Ambassador Mills emphasized the importance of transparency in the electoral process and urged stakeholders to respect established legal procedures. The call for peace was seen as crucial in avoiding further escalation following the announcement of the election results.
APC’s Victory Amid Allegations
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, emerged as the winner with 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who garnered 247,274 votes. Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata finished in third place with 22,761 votes. The smooth announcement of the result was overshadowed by underlying allegations of misconduct, casting doubt over the entire process.
US Commitment to Free Elections
The US reaffirmed its commitment to supporting free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria, despite not addressing the election’s alleged irregularities. Ambassador Mills’ statement highlighted the importance of transparency and public confidence in democracy, but the failure to acknowledge the flaws in the Edo election raises questions about international observation standards and the broader implications for Nigeria’s electoral future.
