US Supplies Long Range Missiles to Ukraine

American officials confirm supplies of US long-range ballistic missiles to Ukraine to confront advancing Russian forces. Recent US media reports confirm $300 million aid-funded missiles, directed by President Joe Biden, targeting Russian installations. President Biden’s recent approval of a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine demonstrates significant support for its defense efforts.

The US had previously given Ukraine mid-range ATACMS, hesitating due to concerns about compromising military readiness. President Biden reportedly confidentially approved sending the long-range system, capable of launching missiles up to 300km (186 miles), in February.

State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel confirmed US supply of long-range ATACMS to Ukraine, kept secret for operational security.
This decision was made at Ukraine’s request.

The exact number of dispatched missiles is uncertain, but Jake Sullivan plans additional deliveries, emphasizing their strategic importance. He cautions against viewing them as the sole solution.

Reuters reported these longer-range missiles, for the first time, targeting a Russian airfield in occupied Crimea. The New York Times reported an attack using these missiles targeted Russian troops in the occupied port city of Berdyansk. Facing depleted ammunition stocks and ongoing Russian advances, Kyiv intensifies appeals for support from Western allies against the aggression.

The recent aid package’s approval, after months of congressional deadlock and opposition, marks a significant milestone in the conflict. President Biden has celebrated its enactment, emphasizing its implications for both national and global security. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed determination to leverage the newfound support to counter Russian ambitions. Zelensky’s warnings of an impending Russian offensive reflect concerns over recent territorial losses, underscoring the urgent need for bolstered defense. US officials reaffirm unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine despite potential Russian gains, amidst a conflict causing significant casualties and displacement.
