“I Would Never Encourage my Child to Pursue a Career in the Nigerian Military”
A retired military officer, Colonel Nasiru Salami, has revealed that he would never encourage his children to pursue a career in the Nigerian Army, citing the challenges he faced during his service. The 76-year-old veteran shared his perspective in a candid interview, reflecting on his experiences and their lasting impact on his views about military life.
A Lifetime of Service
Colonel Salami, who served in the Nigerian Army for over three decades, highlighted the sacrifices demanded of soldiers. He noted that while the military instills discipline and patriotism, the journey is fraught with hardships, including long periods away from family, inadequate support systems, and the psychological toll of combat. “The army shaped me, but it also took a lot from me,” he stated.
Challenges of Military Life
The retired officer spoke at length about the struggles faced by military personnel, including poor remuneration, lack of adequate healthcare, and insufficient recognition for their sacrifices. “Many soldiers dedicate their lives to the nation, yet their efforts often go unappreciated. It’s not the kind of life I’d want for my children,” he said.
Declining Interest in Military Careers
Colonel Salami’s sentiments reflect a growing reluctance among families with military backgrounds to encourage the next generation to enlist. He noted that societal perceptions of the military have shifted, with many viewing it as a career path fraught with risks and limited rewards.
Call for Reform
The veteran urged the government to prioritize the welfare of military personnel, stressing the importance of improved pay, housing, and healthcare. He also emphasized the need for better post-service support to ensure retired soldiers can live with dignity. “If these issues are addressed, maybe more people will consider the army as a viable career option,” he remarked.
A Legacy of Service and Reflection
Despite his reservations about military service for his children, Colonel Salami expressed pride in his contributions to the nation. He urged young Nigerians to weigh their options carefully but acknowledged that serving one’s country remains a noble pursuit. “The army gave me purpose, but it’s a path that requires immense sacrifice,” he concluded.
