WAEC Withholds 215,267 Results Over Exam Malpractice

Large Number of Results Withheld

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the withholding of results for 215,267 candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This number represents 11.92% of the 1,805,216 candidates who participated in the examination, conducted between April 30th and June 24th, 2024.

Malpractice Cases Highlighted

During the announcement, Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria Office, revealed that various cases of examination malpractice are linked to the withheld results. Although the figure is significant, it represents a 4.37% decrease compared to the 16.29% recorded in 2023. Dangut stressed that WAEC remains committed to addressing malpractice by taking decisive action against all parties involved.

Challenges in Exam Integrity

Dr. Dangut pointed out the increasing challenges WAEC faces, particularly the use of mobile phones in examination halls, despite the existing ban, and instances of organized cheating in certain schools. He confirmed that investigators are currently examining these cases and will present the findings to WAEC’s appropriate committees for further action.

Implications for Affected Candidates

WAEC will notify the affected candidates of the final decisions regarding their results through their respective schools once the investigations conclude. WAEC has also provided an avenue for candidates to seek redress via its website if they wish to contest the findings related to their withheld results.

Encouraging Statistics Despite Challenges

On a positive note, Dr. Dangut reported that 73.79% of candidates achieved credit passes or higher in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics. This statistic translates to 1,332,089 successful candidates out of the total number who sat for the exam.
