Worsening Doctor-Patient Ratio in Nigeria Raises Concerns

Critical Shortage of Medical Professionals

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has reported a severe worsening of doctor-patient ratio across Nigeria, signaling a deepening healthcare crisis. NMA President Bala Audu reported during an Abuja media session that the doctor-patient ratio is significantly below WHO standards.

Alarming Emigration Statistics

Recent data shows that about 1,056 consultants emigrated from Nigeria between 2019 and 2023 for better opportunities abroad. Additionally, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors noted that over 900 members moved to Europe from January to September 2023. These figures underscore a significant brain drain in Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Poor working conditions, inadequate equipment, worsening security, and uncompetitive salaries are driving this mass exodus.

Government Efforts and Challenges

To counter the healthcare brain drain, the NMA demands major enhancements in working conditions for medical staff. Bala Audu emphasized improving healthcare professionals’ well-being through better salaries, work environments, and housing. Such provisions are crucial for interns and resident doctors who need to be close to medical facilities.

Strategic Interventions Proposed

To address the ‘Japa’ migration of healthcare workers, Health Minister Muhammad Pate raised annual enrollment quotas for medical schools. The quotas for nursing and other health professional schools have been increased from 28,000 to 64,000. This move aims to counteract the severe shortage of healthcare professionals in Nigeria. This initiative aims to mitigate the shortage of medical professionals in the country.

Improving Training and Facilities

The NMA President also called for an upgrade in training facilities to accommodate the increased number of students. This improvement is crucial to maintain the quality of medical education as the student numbers double. The association is in discussions with the government to ensure these enhancements are implemented effectively.
