EU Criticizes X for Verification Issues
The European Union’s technology regulator has accused Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, of potentially misleading users through its blue tick verification system. According to the EU, the system allows anyone to purchase a blue tick, leading users to believe these accounts are verified for authenticity when they are not.
Musk’s Fiery Response to EU Regulations
Elon Musk responded strongly to the EU’s accusations, labeling the Digital Services Act (DSA) as “misinformation” and arguing that the rules imposed by the EU amount to “censored speech.” Musk, who acquired X for $44 billion in 2022, expressed his disapproval of the regulations that he believes stifle free speech.
Investigation Under the Digital Services Act
The investigation, initiated under the EU’s DSA, could result in significant penalties for X, including fines up to 6% of its global annual turnover. The DSA mandates large tech firms to actively combat illegal content and uphold public safety online, with the EU now scrutinizing X’s adherence to these regulations.
Lack of Transparency and Data Issues
Further complicating matters, the EU has criticized X for a lack of transparency in its advertising practices and for not providing necessary data for research as required by EU rules. This aspect of the investigation highlights broader concerns regarding X’s operations within the European bloc.
Potential Consequences for X
If X is found to be in violation of the DSA, it faces not only substantial fines but also a possible “enhanced supervision period” to ensure compliance with EU regulations. This would involve closer scrutiny of X’s practices, particularly around the dissemination of illegal content and the handling of misinformation.
Ongoing EU Scrutiny of Tech Giants
The case against X is part of a broader effort by the EU to regulate major technology companies more stringently. Other tech giants like ByteDance’s TikTok, AliExpress, and Meta Platforms are also under investigation for similar concerns. This regulatory push reflects the EU’s commitment to ensuring tech companies operate transparently and responsibly, particularly when it comes to user safety and data integrity.
