Yobe Claims Using Repentant Insurgents to Counter Insurgency

Integrating Repentant Insurgents

The Yobe State Government has adopted a novel approach to counterinsurgency as it claims incorporating repentant Boko Haram members into a Hybrid Force in order to counter insurgency. This initiative aims to leverage the unique insights and capabilities of these former insurgents to enhance the state’s security operations. On Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (retd.), Special Adviser on Security to Governor Mai Mala Buni, addressed the press in Damaturu, shedding light on this strategy.

Addressing Public Concerns

The announcement came in response to public concerns regarding the involvement of former insurgents in security measures, particularly in Geidam town. Abdulsalam reassured residents that the government’s priority remains the safety and well-being of its citizens. He emphasised that no decision is taken lightly or without considering its potential impact on the people.

Role of the Hybrid Force

Abdulsalam explained that the ‘Hybrid Force’ plays a crucial role in assisting security agencies across several areas, including Damaturu, Goniri, and Buni Yadi. Notably, these former insurgents provide valuable intelligence on current Boko Haram and ISWAP activities. With their sources still embedded within these groups, they can offer precise information about collaborators and logistics, which is critical for disrupting terrorist operations.

Intelligence and Arrests

In Geidam, the Hybrid Force has proven instrumental in identifying and arresting individuals linked to Boko Haram. Abdulsalam highlighted the recent success in detaining twelve people involved in supplying essential goods to insurgents. These arrests have disrupted the supply chain and significantly hampered Boko Haram’s operations in the area.

Community Cooperation

The special adviser urged Geidam residents to support security efforts by cooperating with authorities. He pointed out that insurgents rely heavily on supplies such as food, fuel, and medicine, which they often obtain through illicit means. By helping to identify and report suspicious activities, the community can play a pivotal role in weakening the insurgents’ operational capabilities.

Ensuring Sustained Peace

Abdulsalam concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in Yobe State. Furthermore, the integration of repentant insurgents into the Hybrid Force represents a strategic effort to leverage their knowledge and connections for the greater good. Consequently, this innovative approach aims to bring an end to the insurgency and foster lasting peace in the region.
