Yoruba Nation Petition: Igboho Urges FG Not to Hijack Process

Igboho Cautions Against Pressure on British High Commissioner

Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, has urged the Federal Government not to intimidate the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, over his recent petition on the Yoruba nation. Igboho submitted a 25-page petition to the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, calling for the recognition of a sovereign Yoruba state. He described the reported summoning of Montgomery as an unnecessary attempt to apply pressure on the British diplomat.

Petition Submitted to the UK Government

Igboho filed the petition to the UK government to highlight the Yoruba nation’s quest for independence. He emphasised that the British government had colonised Nigeria and played a key role in the 1914 amalgamation, which he described as a “marriage of inconvenience.” Igboho argued that Yoruba people have a constitutional right to seek secession, especially after the 100-year mark following the amalgamation.

Intentions Behind the Petition

The petition, according to Igboho, was submitted to the UK to ensure the British government could serve as a witness when the issue of Yoruba secession is discussed at international forums, particularly the United Nations. He reassured the Yoruba people that the petition is a legitimate effort to gain global recognition for the movement. Igboho urged supporters to remain calm and committed to the peaceful pursuit of their goals.

Response to Nigerian Government’s Reaction

In his statement, Igboho dismissed any attempts by the Nigerian government to intimidate or silence the push for Yoruba nationhood. He reassured the public that such moves would not derail the movement’s efforts. He also stated that Prime Minister Keir Starmer may not have seen the petition yet, as official response times for such matters are typically around two weeks.

Commitment to Non-Violence

Igboho reiterated that the Yoruba nation movement remains committed to peaceful and non-violent methods. He called on his supporters to remain resolute, stating that the ultimate goal is to harness the full potential of a sovereign Yoruba nation. The movement aims to pursue its agenda through legitimate and peaceful means, ensuring global recognition.

Global Advocacy for Yoruba Nation

In conclusion, Igboho stressed the importance of gaining international support for the Yoruba nation cause. He made it clear that the summoning of the British High Commissioner would not deter the campaign, adding that the movement would continue to seek backing from the global community. The push for Yoruba self-determination, according to Igboho, is a cause that will persist regardless of the Nigerian government’s efforts to hinder it.
