Call to Action for Youths
Dr. Charles Eghweree, a Political Science lecturer at the University of Benin, has urged Nigerian youths to embrace politics. He stressed that young people cannot afford to be mere spectators while critical decisions affecting their future are made. Dr. Eghweree delivered this message during his keynote address at an event organised by Frame Democracy for Political Science students.
Importance of Youth Participation
Highlighting the consequences of youth apathy, Dr. Eghweree warned that neglecting political involvement allows unqualified individuals to ascend to leadership positions. He urged students to engage in politics at all levels to ensure competent governance. According to him, active participation is essential for youths to influence the country’s direction and secure a better future
Historical Examples of Youth Leadership
Drawing from history, Dr. Eghweree reminded the audience that Nigerian nationalists like Chief Anthony Enahoro and Nnamdi Azikiwe were young when they made significant political impacts. He encouraged today’s youths to emulate these figures and work towards rectifying the current political imbalances in the nation. This historical perspective aimed to inspire students to take on leadership roles
Combating Political Manipulation
Dr. Eghweree also addressed the issue of poverty being used as a tool for political manipulation. He suggested that youths can counter this by forming and supporting political parties that align with their values. By doing so, they can rally their peers and create a substantial impact on the political landscape.
Frame Democracy’s Initiative
Jafar Mahmud, Project Manager of Frame Democracy, explained the organization’s focus on Political Science students. He pointed out that despite Nigeria being a democracy, traces of authoritarianism persist. Mahmud highlighted the importance of educating and sensitising youths about politics to correct the mistakes of past leaders and foster a democratic culture.
Student Reactions
Students Oshoke David and Okolie Isabella expressed gratitude for the event, noting that it sparked their interest in politics. They appreciated the organisers for providing a platform to discuss and learn about political engagement. Their reactions underscore the event’s success in motivating young people to consider active political roles
