Commission Dismisses $500 Levy for Returning Nigerians
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has rejected a proposal advocating a $500 tax on Nigerians and tourists returning to the country during the festive season. The suggestion, submitted by prominent socialite Chief Dokun Olumofin to President Bola Tinubu, aimed to implement the levy between November and January to boost government revenue.
NIDCOM Criticizes Proposal as Exploitative
In a statement released on Wednesday by its Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NIDCOM denounced the idea, describing it as exploitative and counterproductive to efforts in engaging the Nigerian diaspora. The commission stressed that such a tax would discourage diaspora members from visiting their homeland, severing vital cultural ties and economic contributions.
Diaspora Contributions at Stake
Highlighting the diaspora’s impact, NIDCOM cited record-breaking remittances in 2024 and Lagos hotels’ revenue of N54 billion during December. The commission argued that taxing returnees could harm these economic benefits, discouraging investments and tarnishing Nigeria’s global image. “Such advice will no doubt mitigate efforts of the Diaspora Commission in encouraging the Diasporans to visit home, invite others, and invest,” the statement read.
Enabling Tourism and Investment
Instead of imposing additional costs, NIDCOM urged the government to prioritize creating a favorable environment for tourism and investment. The commission praised Lagos State for its success in attracting visitors and encouraged other states to adopt similar strategies. It warned that increasing costs for returnees could damage Nigeria’s reputation in the global tourism market.
Balancing Revenue and Engagement
NIDCOM further emphasized the importance of balancing revenue generation with fostering diaspora engagement. It described the proposal as a potential avenue for corruption and an attack on efforts to attract Nigerians abroad to contribute positively to the country’s development.
A Call for Collaboration
In conclusion, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diaspora relations and promoting national growth. It called on the government and stakeholders to collaborate in building a welcoming environment for Nigerians abroad, ensuring they remain active contributors to the nation’s prosperity.
