In a bid to shed light on the recent spate of violence in Zamfara State, the police have provided clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack on worshipers and residents in Gusau. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, has sparked concerns over the security situation in the region.
According to the Zamfara State Police Command, by its spokesperson, ASP Yazid Abubakar, the attack resulted in the tragic death of a man identified as Ashiru Nagoma, who reportedly resisted the assailants. The bandits, in turn, fatally shot him and abducted his wife and neighbor.
Contrary to initial reports suggesting an attack on a mosque during midnight prayers, Abubakar clarified that the bandits had a specific target, namely, Nagoma. He emphasized that the assailants did not assault the mosque itself, dispelling rumors of an attack on worshipers during tahajjud prayers.
The tragic incident comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in Zamfara State due to recurring banditry and insecurity. This latest development underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect residents and prevent further loss of lives.
It’s worth noting that Zamfara State has experienced several incidents of bandit attacks in recent months. In February, scores of worshipers were abducted from a mosque in Tsafe town, further highlighting the vulnerability of communities to such violent incursions.
An indigene of the area, recounted the harrowing ordeal, stating that the bandits stormed the mosque during the early morning prayer session, instilling fear and chaos among the worshipers. The assailants reportedly warned against attempts to flee and threatened to kill anyone attempting to escape.
